On the Gateway 24″ FHD2400 LCD

I recently bought the Gateway FHD2400 24″ LCD for my new gaming box. It has an impressive list of features:

  1. 1920×1200 native resolution
  2. Faroudja® video processing
  3. 4 USB ports
  4. HDMI, VGA, DVI-D, Component, Composite and S-Video inputs
  5. Optional speaker bar - that I did not buy.
  6. Rotating screen for landscape and portrait viewing
  7. A stand that allows the user to adjust height and vertical/horizontal tilt.

I don’t play most games at the native 1920×1200 resolution as frame-rate is king in FPS and RTS games and playing at lower resolutions on an LCD often results in ugliness. I am not sure if it is the nVidia scaling or the Faroujda processing, but playing at 1680×1050 on the machine still looks every good. Team Fortress 2 and World in Conflict are both beautiful on the glossy screen.

Drawbacks? It is a TN screen so color reproduction is not as sharp as on an IPS screen. Viewing angle - another bugbear of TN screens - is also a problem. While I do not care about horizontal angles as I am the only one using the screen and I am sitting face-on, vertical is an issue. The top of the screen is too dark when displaying dark text on a dark background. Some will not like the glossy screen. Some folks have reported abnormal backlight bleed.

All in all, those drawbacks are minor. I am usually a fan of matte screens but the glossy screen works here as this computer is used for games and video playback. The adjustable stand is a welcome change from what I have seen hit the market lately. The backlight bleed on my unit is well within acceptable range for a 24″ LCD at this price range.

Recommended.

Thanks for that reminder to try to simple fix first…
I was slowly getting more and more disappointed in the lack of contrast on my new 20″ iMac at home, text was getting washed out and faded at the bottom of the page…

    DOH!

You reminded me to tilt the monitor up to me, and viola! Contrast is back and text clearly legible… I sure feel silly now.
