App Store for iPhone: Serious business

The number of games on the App Store is amazing. It is currently the most populated category and is only going to increase as developers unlock the power of the device. The “What’s Hot” grouping also shows that they are among the most popular apps (based on whatever algorithm Apple uses).
I am still waiting on some solid RPGs to be published for the iPhone.

NetShare: Share your 3G connection

NetShare was released, pulled, and re-released on the iTunes Application Store. In one line – you can set up your iPhone as a proxy server and share the connection.

Entourage 2008 and an iCal annoyance

I have been using iCal as my calendaring solution since Apple’s move to Intel made running Office 2004 for Mac even more painful than before. Now that Office 2008 for Mac is now a Universal Binary, I made the move over to Entourage 2008 last night. I worked through some inconsistencies between the calendars and at the 85-95% level decided to go ahead and use Sync Services to sync Entourage calendar events with iCal (and on to my iPhone) and delete the iCal calendars.

That’s when the annoyance rears its ugly head – iCal won’t allow you to delete a calendar without notifying everyone of the deletion. I had to hop off the network, allow iCal to queue up the email, and then delete those emails in Mail.app. This is a very annoying change from previous versions of iCal that queried if you wanted to delete or delete and notify.

In any case, I am running on Entourage for work email and calendaring with the sync over to iCal. I still don’t like the individual metadata files that Entourage uses for Spotlight to overcome the non-searchable monolithic database it uses. From first 24 hours of use I am neither thrilled nor disgusted by Entourage. In a few more days I should be able to provide more feedback.

NetNewsWire now free

My RSS aggregator of choice is now free. This provides a compelling reason to use NNW in lieu of Mail.app or even the solid OSS Vienna.

OmniFocus 1.0 released

From Ken Case, OmniGroup head honcho:

January 8 is finally here, and OmniFocus 1.0 has shipped! I’m forwarding a copy of the press release below (with its links to our web site and online store).

Today’s 1.0 release isn’t the end of our journey, of course–it’s simply our first non-beta release! We’ve already started planning out our future roadmap, thinking about how we can improve synchronization between multiple computers and about how we might be able to take advantage of the iPhone SDK when it’s released next month.

While 1.0 isn’t the end, it’s certainly a significant milestone. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the whole team here at Omni for all the long hours, and to thank all of our families for their patience and support!

I’d also like to thank you all for your participation in the beta process: you’ve all given us an incredible amount of feedback (27,458 messages sent to us directly, with another 13,194 messages posted to our forums) which has really helped us make OmniFocus a stronger product. (And, of course, a special thanks to the 13,590 of you who pre-ordered: your support and vote of confidence is really appreciated!)

Enjoy!

Ken

Medialink – Mac to Playstation 3 streaming

I’ve been using Connect360 to stream photos, movies, and music from my G5 to my Xbox 360 since I bought the latter. Streaming from Macs to my Playstation 3 was not easy – for some reason I could never get EyeConnect to work correctly. What was annoying was that TVersity worked just fine from my Windows box.

All that is fixed as of today. Nullriver has released news on Medialink with a full release later this week. Based on my experience with Connect360 and PSPWare, I know this will be a must-buy.

Edit: It’s out now!

Last days to pre-order OmniFocus

Highly recommended, especially if you are dabbling with GTD.

We’re closing in on the 1.0 release! Remember, if you pre-order before we release 1.0 this Tuesday (January 8), you’ll receive a 50% early-bird discount. (To the 11,765 of you who have already pre-ordered, thank you!)

Aperture and Lightroom, Day 2

One thing I have learned about photography – the only way to get better is to take more photos. The issue with more photos is you need to develop a workflow to handle it all. I am currently using iPhoto with a very manual method of taking photos out to edit and then re-importing into the library. iView Media Pro was my previous solution but I dropped it with the latest release (and the purchase of Microsoft). I finally settled on trying Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture which both have 30 day trials.

After just 2 days of trying them out, my thoughts:

• Aperture is much more integrated with the OS and the iLife apps. Even a simple thing like syncing with the iPhone is a nice feature.
• Lightroom feels faster as it returns control to the user as it does background processing. That said, I still prefer to let it complete before using the app.
• If you already have a mind for Adobe’s way of doing things, Lightroom is intuitively simple.
• RAW processing (Nikon for me) seems to be equal.
• Aperture supports multiple monitors. I am currently using a Macbook Pro( 2.4Ghz with 4GB of RAM) so the ability to span monitors is very nice.
• Not that I will use them, as I use Gallery (http://gallery2.menalto.com), but Lightroom’s Web galleries are pretty slick. Aperture will, of course, push right to your .Mac site if you have one.

Coda 1.4 released

Coda 1.4 has been released. It appears to be a bug-fix version.

If you’ve been living under a rock, Coda is a wicked good Web dev tool. Editor (Subaetha-based), SCP/FTP/WebDAV client (Transmit-based), Preview (Webkit-based), CSS editor, and Terminal – all in one app. Sounds like a kludge, neh? It’s not – it actually all works very well. I’ve been living off the preview for a while. It’s time for me to buy.
